Public Art Project at East Regional Library – Alida Labbe with the Arts Council of Ft. Worth presented the art project entitled WILDFLOWER proposed to be installed between the access road and parking lot of the East Regional Library as to not distract from the already-iconic clock tower and building front.
—  The Eastside Arts Collective applied for a $50,000 Public Art Project, and was awarded the project in 2010.  To cover inflation of costs and create a more impactful artwork, City Council will be asked to approve another $30,000 for the project in the FWPA Annual Work plan for 2016.
—  The Artist Selection Panel was composed of then City Council Member Danny Scarth, an Art Commissioner, two community members and an arts professional.
—  This proposed design was chosen over the other entries because it is “vibrant and engaging,” the ability to see it from the road, and the way it relates to the diverse community that the library serves.
—  The artists were inspired by the following quote by Frederick Douglas:  “Once you learn to readyou will be forever free
—  The concept includes 120-160 aluminum or steel elements in various shades of red and pink, in an arrangement evoking the look of a field of wildflowers.
—  The vertical elements will vary in height between four and twelve feet.
—  Native grasses will be planted throughout the installation, with pathways allowing for people to walk through the artwork.
—  At night, some of the poles will be lit, although the exact number will be dictated by budget.
—  The artist feels it is important for the art to be experienced both close up and from the frontage road and highway, which are surrounded by TxDot grass areas.
—  The artist wants to work with the community to find sayings that would be appropriate to cut into about ten of the poles – quotes that refer to community, reading and learning would be best.
—  Once installed, the artwork will be maintained by the FWPA Collection Manager, using a fully-funded conservation fund.
—  Timeline:  Staff anticipates the artists to take about two months to pull together a budget and refine the design based on input gathered at community meetings.  They will then come back to present their refined design for additional feedback.  The project will then go to the Arts Commission for approval, then to City Council for final approval.  Total time for remaining design is approximately four months.

For comments/suggestions/questions about the art, contact Alida Labbe at 817-298-3034 or email alabbe@fwpublicart.org

WNA and Woodhaven Country Club are co-sponsoring a picnic at the club on July 4th from 11AM-4PM.  There will be typical picnic foods (hamburgers, hotdogs, sides, and brownies).  There will also be a water slide, jump house, games, and putting/pitching contests with prizes. The committee discussed providing WNA volunteers to monitor the water slide, jump house, and assist with selling tickets.  Lucretia and Kay will meet with the club for further discussion.  Bobbi will send out notices to the entire neighborhood.

Lucretia suggested selling “grab bags” for $20 each as a fundraiser.  The committee agreed, and Lucretia and Kay will solicit donations. Other members of the committee agreed to assist as needed.

Real Estate Report
There was a meeting with Woodhaven Community Development and Taco Casa regarding their sign variance.  There will be two 2’ X 6’ 8” LED screens posted in the same color scheme as the Taco Casa logo.  The sign will change once or twice a day, and Justin will send a letter to the City of Ft. Worth recommending the agreed-upon terms.

Marty advised that there are three active listing sand six pending home sales in Woodhaven.  There have been 14 homes sold in the last six months.

Landscape Report
Lorenzo gave the latest landscaping bill to Doug.  It was under $1200.

Lorenzo will get the Christmas decorating signs from Becky.

Everyone agreed that there needs to be more color at the markers.  Lorenzo will ask Mike to take care of it.

The markers will be visited before the next meeting to determine where the property lines are and who owns adjoining properties.  We agreed that we should not continue to maintain what is not ours, and we should hold the property owners accountable for maintenance of surrounding properties.

OLD BUSINESS:
Shredding Event – The steering committee thanked David and Laurie Green for their efficiency at the shredding event.  They told Justin that they would do it again next year.  Albertson’s was also thanked.  For the next shredding event, we will look for other companies since the one currently used raised their prices so drastically.

NEW BUSINESS:
Discount Program – We need to start gathering new participants soon for next year.

  • LA Fitness is now on board, and Bobbi is waiting for something from them for publicity.
  • Luby’s folks are talking about it with their corporate office.
  • Taco Casa may want to participate next year

Meeting concluded at 8:05 PM.

5/21/15 Dinner Meeting

The attendees of the May 21st WNA dinner meeting gave Danny Scarth a standing ovation for his nine years of public service to the East Side.  He and his wife Lucretia were honored with an engraved vase from the membership.

Rick Disney chaired the program titled, “So you think you can do anything you want on your property…”  A discussion of codes, ordinances, deed restrictions and covenants.  First to speak was Carl Ellis, the East Side Code Enforcement Supervisor.  He gave some descriptions and definitions of code violations and encouraged folks to call Amber Hamilton at 817-392-1234 to ask questions and/or file a report.  You can also submit code violations online at http://fortworthtexas.gov/codecompliance .

Justin also encouraged neighbors to talk to neighbors before calling Code Enforcement.  For example, if their grass is high, there may be a legitimate reason and perhaps we can pull together to help.  Also, if you would like WNA to send a note to your neighbor reminding them of specific code violations and deed restrictions, please contact Marty Jackson at martyjackson@sbcglobal.net .

Next to speak was NPO Brad Perez.  He gave us an update on local burglaries and car break-ins.  He reminded everyone that it is very important to call the police if someone you don’t know is at your door or on your street.  Perhaps they are scouting the area before breaking in.  Perhaps they are looking inside your home when you open your door.  Perhaps you will be the next victim.  Don’t give them the chance.  Call the police.  Let the officers determine if they are legitimately supposed to be on your street.

Carl Langley, the Woodhaven Code Blue Captain, advised that Code Blue always welcomes new patrollers.  If you are interested, please visit http://woodhavencodeblue.com/ and click on Join Us.  The next training will be Saturday, June 13th.

Mr. Disney explained that there are several sets of deed restrictions/covenants for Woodhaven and he read some of the variances between them.  If you do not have a copy of yours, please send your residential address to Rick Disney at rdisney@prodigy.net and he will email you a copy.

Tracy with Community Engagement encouraged us to contact our liaison Ruben.Olmos@fortworthtexas.gov (817-392-2043) should we have questions about water restrictions, recycling, West Nile Virus or other community concerns.  If they can’t answer your question, they can direct you to the right resources.

Finally, Justin reminded us of upcoming events:
—  Memorial Day Picnic at Woodhaven Country Club
—  Keep your personal information safe and secured.  Shred your documents on Saturday, May 30th in Albertson’s parking lot.
—  July 4th WNA and WCC combined event.  More details to come…

There will be no more dinner meetings until September.  In the mean time, please feel free to contact a member of the Steering Committee if you have any concerns or suggestions.

Mark Meiresonne gave the Security report.  There is currently no power to the “camer poles”.  He contacted 2 companies and they needed to know our budget.  One man gave a rough estimate of $10,000-$20,000 depending on which option we took.  Mark does not see the use of cameras on corners as being a big deterrent to crime and suggests we set this aside for now until we have available funds.

Lorenzo Evans gave the Landscape report.  He will get a detailed proposal for 2015 from Mike Carter.  Clairita took the time to walk the areas with Mike to see exactly what our areas include.  Mike has increased the spaces provided for at Scott’s request (last year) but not increased his price.  The Steering Committee gave Lorenzo the charge of selecting the Yard of the Month each month.

Lucretia Scarth gave the Special Events update.  March 28th is Cowtown Cleanup.  We will meet at Albertson’s parking lot.  We still look forward to the Shredding Event, July 4th Celebration and Back to School Ice Cream Social.

Rick Disney suggested we add a personal liability clause to our homeowner’s policy.  He also clarified that WNA is a “not for profit” organization but NOT tax exempt.

Under New Business, we brainstormed suggestions for meetings.  Justin would like to hold a dinner meeting every other month and recommended that the March meeting would be an appropriate time to allow political candidates for our district to speak.   The Woodhaven Country Club will collect the money for the dinners.  Other suggestions were Elder Law, Code Enforcement, and the PID.

Albertson’s discount was also discussed with everyone agreeing a keyfob card would be best.  Other businesses will be contacted for participation.

The idea of a quarterly newsletter was discussed.  It would benefit WCD and the Club, as well as WNA.   Therefore they will be asked to offset the expense.

Justin will talk to Bobbi about the Website.

Elaine moved to adjourn the meeting.  Doug seconded.  Meeting was adjourned.  Submitted by Elaine Hansen, WNA Secretary
